Mathematics English Medium in Sri Lanka

The short answer: choose the medium your child is registered for at the examination, not the medium you would prefer them to learn in. Candidates select their preferred medium when they apply to the Department of Examinations, and that is the language the question paper arrives in. Everything else in this guide follows from that one decision.

What “English medium” means in a Sri Lankan school

Sri Lanka’s bilingual programme was introduced in 2001, initially for Advanced Level science stream classes, and uses English as the medium of instruction for selected subjects while the mother tongue continues for the rest. Maths, science and technology, and social science subjects are the ones usually taught this way from Grade 6 upward (National Education Commission).

So “English medium” rarely means a child’s whole education is in English. In a government school it normally means a handful of subjects are, and maths is commonly one of them.

One thing to confirm rather than assume: government schools limit how many subjects a student may sit in English medium. That limit is widely reported as five subjects, but we could not confirm the current figure against a readable primary source — the Education Commission’s policy document is published as a scanned image. Ask your school’s examination officer what the limit is now and which subjects it applies to. It matters, because it determines whether English medium maths is even available to your child alongside their other choices.

Why the medium decision is worth getting right

The mathematics is the same in every medium. The language the question is asked in is not, and that is where marks are lost.

• Terminology. A student who has only ever heard the English term will hesitate over the Sinhala or Tamil one under exam pressure, and hesitation costs time on a paper that does not give you spare time.
• Instruction verbs. “Hence”, “deduce”, “show that”, “correct to two decimal places” each demand a specific thing. Students who read them loosely lose method marks on questions they could solve.
• Word problems. These are reading comprehension with numbers attached. They are the clearest place a medium mismatch shows up.

If your child is already in an English medium maths class at school, an English medium tuition class reinforces one vocabulary rather than splitting it. If they are not, adding one is a bigger decision than it looks.

Questions to ask before you pay

1. Which syllabus year do you teach to? Notes written for an older syllabus still circulate widely. Ask directly.
2. Do you teach the whole class in English? This is the honest question, and the answer is often no. Many classes advertised as English medium are taught mostly in Sinhala or Tamil with English terms written on the board. That can be a reasonable teaching choice, but you should know which one you are buying.
3. How many students are in the class this month? Not capacity. The actual number.
4. Are papers marked and returned? “We do past papers” is not an answer. Ask whether the student gets their script back with corrections, and how quickly.
5. Can my child sit one class first? Most confident teachers agree. A flat refusal is worth noticing.

When switching medium is and is not a good idea

Reasonable: the child is moving to an international syllabus, or is early enough in secondary school that there are years to absorb the vocabulary, or their school has just moved the subject to English medium and the class should follow.

Usually a mistake: switching in the exam year. There is no time to rebuild terminology while also covering the syllabus, and the paper will not make allowances.

Worth pausing on: switching because English medium sounds more prestigious. It is a language decision with mark consequences, and the child sitting the paper carries them.

If you decide to switch, change the examination registration and the tuition class together. Doing one without the other is the specific mistake this guide exists to prevent.
